Whit’s End Mealtime Devotions

Title: Whit’s End Mealtime Devotions
Author: Crystal Bowman, Tricia Goyer
Genre: ,
Description: This is a series of 90 devotions designed to be used throughout mealtime with your family. It is broken down into 64 "anytime" devotions, 15 "holiday" devotions and 11 "theme" devotions. Each of these follow the same basic layout: 1. Mealtime Prayer - a prayer based on the day's devotion 2. Appetizer - a tidbit of information to peak interest 3. Main Course - a small "byte" to further peak your interest, followed by a scripture reading 4. Table Talk - questions for discussion 5. Vitamins and Minerals - a short, close-out scripture

I am still not sure what to think about this devotion guide. Our family really, REALLY loves listening to Adventures in Odyssey and were really happy to see this book come out. Unfortunately, the only thing related to Adventures in Odyssey, or Whit’s End is the title itself (and I guess the little images that go along with each devotion). Other than that, it really could have been named anything else. For us, that was a bit of a disappointment.

For the content itself, we found it a little bit lacking. While I really liked the layout of each devotion, I did wish there was a little more for the “Main Course.” Obviously the scripture readings are very important, but I had hoped for a bit more “story” to go along with it to really help our kids understand what the scripture is talking about – in a way they could understand. That was something I would have expected with it coming out of “Whit’s End.”

Overall, not something we would have picked off the shelf at a bookstore if we had been able to look through it beforehand. Would I recommend it to others? Possibly. I am sure there are plenty of people out there that would really enjoy using this around their dinner table. For us, it just wasn’t a good fit.
